This hotel, which opened in 2018, is located across the street from an office building, away from the hustle and bustle of the main thoroughfares. It’s an ideal position for a residential house, and that’s exactly what it was. Built in 1907 by John Jacob Astor IV, an American developer enthralled with the spirit of early twentieth-century Paris and amused that the street’s name—Rue d’Astorg—was very similar to his own surname, he believed the site was ideal.
Following his sensational 1909 divorce and remarriage to a younger lady, Astor, whose New York ventures include The St. Regis and Knickerbocker hotels (both of which still stand today), sought sanctuary in the completed home for an extended honeymoon. The couple spent the winter of 1911/12 in Paris and Egypt, escaping the suffocating atmosphere of New York society (dubbed “The Four Hundred” because of his mother’s ballroom’s precise capacity).
During the voyage, the new Mrs. Astor learned she was pregnant and desired to give birth in the United States. At April of 1912, the Astors and their entourage boarded a spanking new ocean liner in Cherbourg bound for New York. That ship was the RMS Titanic, which, like JJ Astor, never made it to New York.
Over a century later, the memory of those thrilling early days inspired the building of the Maison Astor hotel. Despite being completely renovated, the house retains its personal character, as if it were once a private residence. The lobby is styled as a luxury living room, with registration taking place on a tufted couch.
The intimate atmosphere is mirrored in the light-filled, skylit restaurant, which has an amazing chandelier. Breakfasting there seems like eating with friends, and it nearly makes you want to ask the other guests how well they slept.

Throughout the hotel, touches from the Astor period serve to remind visitors of the building’s history. In the passageways, contemporary pointillist pictures of JJ Astor glare out at visitors, and there’s even a library devoted to their pet dog, Kitty (who also perished on Titanic). The fact that I arrived to the Maison Astor on a train from Cherbourg—the French port where the Astor entourage, which included two personal maids and a private nurse—seemed almost surreal. I looked out the window at the countryside, imaging how it must have looked in 1912, and wondered whether one of the world’s wealthiest men paid any attention to what would be one of his final glances of land.
There’s the pleasure of languor in addition to the attractions of Paris immediately outside the hotel (it’s conveniently positioned near high-end shopping on Rue Faubourg Saint-Honoré). Diners munch on luxuriously American-portioned dishes (I had to double-check with my waitress that the large portion of house-smoked salmon was actually a half order) and Prohibition-style drinks at the hotel bar, which spills out onto sidewalk seats.
Guest rooms are cozy (this is Paris, after all), but not as small as those found in many of the city’s hotels. Many of the rooms feature views of the internal courtyard and the skylit dining room, while others have views of the street. The hotel’s two townhouse-style rooftop apartments, whose balconies overlook either the Eiffel Tower or the Sacre Coeur church, have the greatest views in the city, making them ideal for private occasions. For a more Parisian feel, all rooms feature bathtubs trimmed with Sothys products.
The Remainder
This hotel seems more like a stately house than a hotel, with a residential ambiance and modest accommodations, but the foreign staff is Hilton-charming, and makes for a delightful stay at international standards in the center of the City of Light.
