American Airlines: Three Things I Didn’t Know and Two Things to Remember
on October 6, 2021 by Gary Leff
American Airlines Chief Revenue Officer revealed a few facts that I didn’t know in an interview with Simple Flying late last month that I just recently saw in its entirety over the weekend.
- “Our loyalty program will mirror Jetsmart’s loyalty program.”
- “Offering a single credit card to our customers” will be part of the Gol collaboration.
- It’s mainly superstition that they don’t refer to Austin as a focal city.
Because of the odd history of this industry, anytime someone calls anything a focus city, it’s just a matter of time until they unravel it. However, we view Austin as the beginning of something very exciting, very unique to Austin, but there are probably a number of places in our system that might do something similar.
He also raised a number of other key points, which I’ve already discussed. American is mainly seeking for “really excellent short haul partners” in the airline industry, rather than the long haul carriers with whom they have previously worked (like British Airways, Japan Airlines).
In addition, the airline is shifting away from the traditional US Airways strategy of seasonal Europe trips using low-cost aircraft:
We got rid of several very cheap planes, including the 767, the old A330s, and the 757, thanks to the epidemic. We could be quite opportunistic with such airframes since they were so inexpensive.
It was an acceptable enough thing to go and do if we could travel to Europe for four and a half months and earn decent money, then bring them down and go go to the Caribbean and a few of domestic vacations and things like that, where it was almost like managing margins.
Those items are no longer in our system. Unfortunately, even though they were a result of all of these mergers, they were probably not the greatest thing we could have done for consumers. We really want widebodies that can go out and work hard all year. That’s how we see our international system returning.
That doesn’t exclude out leisure routes like Philadelphia to Croatia, but it might mean a widebody in the summer and an Airbus A321XLR in the winter, with the widebody redeploying to South America.
It also highlights the fact that, having retired its Boeing 767s (which are now mostly used by Amazon Air) and 757s (which are being sold to Northern Pacific Airways), they no longer had inexpensive lift with which to experiment on longer routes.
