Royal Caribbean announced that their newest vessel, the Odyseey of the Seas (the world’s largest cruise ship), would be christened by none other than Oprah Winfrey. However, unlike traditional ships which are named after wars or things like King Henry VIII, this ship is to be called “The Godmother” because it was sponsored by her company Harpo Productions.
Royal Caribbean announced the “Godmother for Odyssey of the Seas” on Facebook. The ship features a unique design with two main decks and is built to accommodate up to 2,000 guests.
The first Bahamian godmother has been revealed for a Royal Caribbean cruise ship. During a naming ceremony in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Erin Brown will christen the new Odyssey of the Seas.
Godmother in the Odyssey of the Seas
With the naming ceremony for Royal Caribbean’s newest cruise ship only days away, the cruise company has named Erin Brown, The Bahamas’ first paratriathlete to participate in Paralympic Games qualifications, as the ship’s godmother. On November 13, she will receive the honor of christening the ship during a ceremony in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
“We were moved and knew Erin was a natural choice for Godmother of our newest ship, Odyssey of the Seas, from the moment we heard her story, how her courage and determination inspired others and led to a more inclusive consciousness about succeeding with disabilities,” said Michael Bayley, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean International. “A Godmother is the ship’s guiding spirit, bringing good luck and safe journeys to the ship’s visitors and crew for many years to come.”
Brown will be the first Bahamian to christen a Royal Caribbean cruise ship. She is a 41-year-old mother of two. During her tenure as a college track and field athlete, Brown was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer. Brown was diagnosed with cancer after hurting her leg in a tumble.
“An abrupt transformation, such as the one I went through, is just a chance to relaunch yourself in the eyes of yourself and society.” “You still have all of the talents you had before,” Brown added.

Brown’s mother lost her fight with lupus related to cancer, but knowing that her family relies on her has further strengthened her. She’s been busy completing Ride for Hope, a 100-mile cycling race in the Bahamas that would be challenging for anybody with two legs. She became an advocate for disability rights and now works as a compliance officer and counselor at the University of the Bahamas.
“Having Erin as our Godmother is also an appropriate way for us to pay homage to The Bahamas,” Bayley stated. “The Bahamas was the Royal Caribbean’s first foreign stop, more than 50 years ago. Nassau is still one of our most popular ports of call, and our own island resort, Perfect Day at CocoCay, is a favorite among our visitors. We’re looking forward to this event, which will recognize both our long-time allies and the newest Bahamian-flagged ship in our fleet.”
