There isn’t much travel to Asia right now, but it’s a safe bet you’ll be able to there in a year. Singapore is considering opening up and treating the virus as an endemic, something that must be dealt with. There will be a lot more immunity from vaccination and previous illness in a year.
Still, there’s a great deal of uncertainty, and that’s why planning trips with miles makes so much sense. A paid ticket may be changeable but you’re fronting cash. Miles you can usually get back for a fee, or in some cases no fee at all.
Right now is a great opportunity to book a year in advance for travel to Asia, since Cathay Pacific is offering business class rewards between the United States and Asia for four people in May and June 2022.
According to Straight to the Points, this is accessible from New York JFK, Chicago O’Hare, Los Angeles, and San Francisco (as well as Toronto and Vancouver).
I’m solely interested in business class seats for four people. Although availability is greater for two people, these reward calendars (from AA.com) offer you an idea of what Cathay Pacific redemption looks like in June:

Alaska Airlines offers the greatest mileage package. Cathay Pacific charges just 50,000 miles each trip between the United States and most of Asia. If necessary, an Alaska Airlines trip may be included in the reward, as well as a free stopover in Hong Kong.
For business class, American AAdvantage costs 70,000 miles each trip. This includes connecting to a Cathay Pacific aircraft as well as flights outside of Hong Kong. You may use American or Alaska in the United States, as well as other partners outside of Hong Kong.
Cathay Pacific’s Asia Miles program will charge 70,000 miles for nonstop flights from Los Angeles to Hong Kong and 85,000 miles for nonstop flights from the East Coast to Hong Kong. Because the program is based on distance, rewards may be worth more miles if the destination is outside of Hong Kong.
When traveling to Hong Kong, you won’t have to pay a lot in fuel surcharges (albeit American AAdvantage and Alaska Airlines don’t), but depending on your ultimate destination, you may.
Cathay Pacific’s own program is your best option if you don’t have American or Alaska miles. Cathay Bank accepts American Express, Citibank, and Capital One. (If you’re using Chase points, you’ll probably book through British Airways.)
Citibank points transfer to American AAdvantage until November 23, making it the strongest transferable points program right now.
